Effective date: 3 October 2026 · Last updated: 3 October 2026
These Terms of Use ("Terms") are an agreement between you and QMETER L.L.C-FZ (QMETER L.L.C-FZ), registered in the Meydan Free Zone, United Arab Emirates, at Meydan Grandstand, 6th floor, Meydan Road, Nad Al Sheba, Dubai, United Arab Emirates ("Ovalight", "we", "us"). They govern your use of the Ovalight website at ovalight.com, the Ovalight iOS app, and related services (together, the "Service").
By using the Service or making a purchase, you agree to these Terms and acknowledge our Privacy Policy and Refund & Acceptance Guarantee Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have under consumer-protection laws that cannot be excluded by contract.
1. What the Service is
1.1 Ovalight is photo-editing software that helps you make photos that follow published size and format requirements for passports, identity cards, visas, and similar documents ("Document Photos"). It guides you while you take the photo, detects the face, crops and resizes the photo (without otherwise editing it, unless a specification allows an optional gentle clean-up of an already plain background that you choose), checks it against a document specification, and produces:
- a digital file for online applications; and
- a printable sheet (for example 4×6 in / 10×15 cm, A4, or US Letter) for printing at home or at a print shop.
1.2 Your photo is processed on your device. The photo tool runs in your browser or in the App on your device. We do not receive your photos. See our Privacy Policy for details and limits of this statement.
1.3 Some features are free. Others — for example high-resolution export, print sheets, or additional document formats ("Paid Features") — require a one-time purchase. We do not sell subscriptions.
1.4 The Service is a tool. We do not submit applications, book appointments, pay government fees, or provide immigration, visa, or legal advice.
2. No government affiliation
2.1 Ovalight is an independent company. We are not a government agency, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by, approved by, or acting on behalf of any government, passport office, embassy, consulate, visa authority, or international organisation (including ICAO).
2.2 Country names, document names, and references to official requirements are used only to describe which published specification a photo is designed to follow. Any trademarks or official names belong to their respective owners.
2.3 Official requirements are published, and can be obtained free of charge, from the relevant authorities. We link to the official sources we rely on where available.
3. Your responsibilities
3.1 Check the requirements. Photo rules differ between countries and documents and change over time. Authorities decide whether to accept a photo, and may apply rules or discretion not described in published specifications. Before you apply, you are responsible for checking the current official requirements for your document — including requirements about how recently the photo was taken, how it must be submitted (for example digitally by a registered provider, as in Germany), glasses, head coverings, expressions, and printing.
3.2 Choose the correct specification (country, document type, and size) in the Service.
3.3 Use a genuine, unaltered likeness. You must use a real, recent photo of the person who will hold the document. You must not use the Service to change a person's appearance, create a likeness of someone else, or produce any photo or document intended to deceive an authority. Using the Service for fraud, forgery, identity theft, or to evade identification is prohibited and may be a crime.
3.4 Photos of other people. Only use a photo of another person if you are their parent or legal guardian or have their permission, and in accordance with applicable law.
3.5 Print correctly. Print the sheet at 100% / "actual size", without scaling or "fit to page", on good-quality photo paper, and check the printed size before you submit it.
3.6 Follow the on-screen warnings. The Service may warn you about issues it detects (for example lighting, shadows, head position). It cannot detect every issue.
4. Who may use the Service
4.1 You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority where you live) to make a purchase. Minors may use the free features only with the involvement of a parent or legal guardian.
4.2 You may not use the Service where it is unlawful, or if you are subject to sanctions that prohibit us from dealing with you. Paid Features are not offered in countries where our payment providers do not operate.
5. Purchases, prices and payment
5.1 Website purchases. Purchases on our Website are sold to you by QMETER L.L.C-FZ. Payments are processed by Stripe on its secure checkout page. You receive an order number; keep it, because you need it for retakes and refund requests. Prices are shown before you pay. During our launch period some prices are marked "Launch price" and the regular price applies from the date shown.
5.2 App purchases. Purchases in the App are made through Apple's In-App Purchase system and are subject to Apple's terms. Apple processes payments and refunds for those purchases.
5.3 Prices are shown before you buy and include applicable taxes where required by law. Retakes: a Complete or Family purchase lets you retake the photo for the same document within 24 hours of purchase, up to 3 times, using your order number and a code sent to your email (or your optional account). Prices may vary by country or region and may change, but a change will not affect a purchase you have already completed.
5.4 Delivery. Paid Features are unlocked on the device you used to buy them, immediately after payment. Because there are no accounts, your unlock is stored on your device; if you clear your browser data or change device, contact us with your order ID and we will help you restore it. Website purchases and App purchases are separate and do not unlock each other.
5.5 One-time purchases only. We do not charge recurring fees.
6. Right of withdrawal (EU, EEA, UK and similar laws)
6.1 If you are a consumer in the EU/EEA or the UK, you normally have a 14-day right to withdraw from an online purchase. For digital content that is supplied immediately, you lose this right once the supply begins, if before purchase you expressly agreed to immediate supply and acknowledged that you would lose your right of withdrawal. We ask for this agreement at checkout, and confirm it in your receipt.
6.2 If you did not give that agreement, you may withdraw within 14 days of purchase by contacting us at /en/refunds/#withdraw and you will receive a full refund.
6.3 This does not affect your statutory rights if the digital content is faulty or not as described.
7. Refunds and the Acceptance Guarantee
7.1 Our Refund & Acceptance Guarantee Policy forms part of these Terms. In summary: if an authority rejects a photo made with a Paid Feature for a reason the Service is designed to check (such as size, head position, or background), and you meet the conditions in that policy, we will refund the price you paid for that purchase.
7.2 The Acceptance Guarantee is not a promise that any authority will accept your photo, and it does not cover government fees, travel, appointments, printing, postage, or any other costs or losses.
7.3 For App purchases, refunds are issued by Apple under Apple's policies. We will support your refund request but cannot issue App Store refunds ourselves.
7.4 The Guarantee is in addition to, and does not limit, your statutory rights.
8. Your licence to use the Service
8.1 We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service, and to use photos you create with it, for your own personal, non-commercial purposes (including for members of your family).
8.2 You may not: (a) copy, modify, reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract the Service's software, models, or specification database, except as allowed by law; (b) resell, sublicense, or offer the Service as a commercial photo service without our written agreement; (c) scrape the Website or use automated means to access it at scale; (d) bypass payment or technical protections; (e) use the Service to infringe others' rights or break the law.
9. Your photos and content
9.1 Your photos remain yours. Because they are processed on your device, we do not receive them, and we claim no rights in them.
9.2 You are responsible for any photo you use with the Service and for having the right to use it.
9.3 If you choose to keep a photo project on your device, you are responsible for deleting it when you no longer need it and for the security of your device.
10. Our intellectual property
10.1 The Service, including its software, models, design, text, illustrations, and our compilation of document specifications, is owned by us or our licensors and protected by law. Ovalight and our logos are our trademarks.
10.2 Document specifications are compiled from official public sources and summarised in our own words. They are provided for convenience; the official source prevails in any conflict.
10.3 Open-source components keep their own licences, and nothing in these Terms (including section 8.2) limits your rights under them. In particular, the Website opens HEIC photos with libheif, licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0: it is served as a separate, replaceable file at https://ovalight.com/wasm/heic/libheif-bundle.mjs, with its licence at https://ovalight.com/wasm/heic/LICENSE.txt and its source code at https://github.com/strukturag/libheif and https://github.com/catdad-experiments/libheif-js.
11. Third-party services
The Service relies on third parties such as Apple, Stripe, our email delivery provider, and our hosting/CDN provider. Their terms and privacy policies govern their services. We are not responsible for third-party services, government portals, or print shops that you choose to use.
12. Availability and changes
12.1 We may update, change, or discontinue features, supported documents, or supported devices. The Service requires a compatible browser or device; some older devices may not support on-device processing.
12.2 If we discontinue a Paid Feature you have bought within the previous 12 months before you have been able to use it, we will refund you.
13. Disclaimers
13.1 We work hard to keep specifications accurate and the Service reliable, and we will provide the Service with reasonable care and skill. However, to the extent permitted by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", and we do not warrant that any authority will accept a photo, that specifications are complete or current at the moment you apply, or that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
13.2 Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any guarantee, warranty, or right that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law — including consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law, statutory rights for digital content in the EU/EEA and UK, and implied warranties that cannot be disclaimed in your state or country.
14. Limitation of liability
14.1 To the extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the total amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, and (b) USD 50.
14.2 To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential losses, or for loss of travel, missed appointments, delays in obtaining a document, or government fees.
14.3 Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law. If you are a consumer in the EU/EEA or UK, we are responsible for foreseeable loss and damage caused by our breach of these Terms or our failure to use reasonable care and skill.
15. Suspension
We may suspend or restrict access to the Service if you breach Section 3.3 or Section 8, or if required by law. If we do so without your breach, you will be entitled to a refund of any unused Paid Features.
16. Governing law and disputes
16.1 These Terms are governed by the laws of the United Arab Emirates as applied in the Emirate of Dubai.
16.2 Before starting any proceedings, please contact us at support@ovalight.com so we can try to resolve the issue informally within 30 days.
16.3 Disputes will be resolved by the courts of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
16.4 If you are a consumer, this choice of law and forum does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of the country where you habitually reside, and you may bring proceedings in the courts of that country where the law allows (for example, under Article 6 of Regulation (EC) 593/2008 (Rome I) and Article 18 of Regulation (EU) 1215/2012).
17. Apple App Store terms
If you downloaded the App from Apple's App Store, the following also applies:
17.1 These Terms are between you and QMETER L.L.C-FZ only, not Apple Inc. ("Apple"). We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the App and its content.
17.2 Your licence to use the App is limited to use on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions, except that the App may be accessed by other accounts associated with you via Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
17.3 We are solely responsible for providing maintenance and support for the App. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support. Contact: support@ovalight.com.
17.4 We are solely responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent not effectively disclaimed. If the App fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price for the App (if any) to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the App, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, or expenses attributable to any failure to conform to any warranty are our responsibility.
17.5 We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or any third party relating to the App or your possession and/or use of it, including (i) product liability claims; (ii) any claim that the App fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement; and (iii) claims arising under consumer protection, privacy, or similar legislation.
17.6 In the event of any third-party claim that the App or your possession and use of it infringes that third party's intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement, and discharge of that claim.
17.7 You represent and warrant that (i) you are not located in a country that is subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or that has been designated by the U.S. Government as a "terrorist supporting" country; and (ii) you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
17.8 Developer name and address: QMETER L.L.C-FZ, Meydan Grandstand, 6th floor, Meydan Road, Nad Al Sheba, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Meydan Free Zone, United Arab Emirates; support@ovalight.com.
17.9 You must comply with applicable third-party terms when using the App (for example, your mobile network's terms).
17.10 Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms, and upon your acceptance of these Terms, Apple will have the right (and will be deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.
Decision (2026-10-03): the App uses Apple's Standard EULA; these Terms apply in addition.
18. General
18.1 Changes. We may update these Terms. Material changes will be notified on the Website and in the App before they take effect. Changes do not apply retroactively to purchases already made.
18.2 Entire agreement. These Terms, the Privacy Policy, and the Refund & Acceptance Guarantee Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service.
18.3 Severability. If any provision is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
18.4 No waiver. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver.
18.5 Assignment. We may transfer our rights and obligations to another organisation if this does not reduce your rights; you may not transfer yours without our consent.
18.6 Language. These Terms may be translated. If there is a conflict, the English version prevails, except where local law requires otherwise.
